Zusammenfassung:A method of making a rigid connection between pipes consists of introducing a first pipe into a second then forming a permanent swelling in the first pipe. The swelling is sufficient to bring about a contact between a part of the outer surface of the first pipe and the inner surface of the second pipe, forming a practically rigid connection between the pipes. It is produced by practically instantaneous radial expansion of the first pipe. The method is intended to be used in marine structures for exploration and exploitation of oil-bearing strata. It is less costly than existing methods, and is of simple and economic construction and easy to operate. It does not produce any plastic deformation of the two components of the joint which could alter the properties of the metal, does not give rise to conc. stresses and facilitates precise mathematical prediction of the resistance to fatigue of the joint under a long term cyclical load. The appts. can be easily withdrawn from the components of the joint in case of defective operation. It does not necessitate the use of a supporting anvil block on the outer surface of the outer component to prevent plastic deformation during formation of the joint.
