Cpds. (I) R1-CH2- H-CH2OH (I) (where R1 is phenyl, substd. by 1 or 2 Cl) are prepd. by reducing the corresponding acid esters with an alkali borohydride or mixed metal hydride. Thus (I; R1 = 3,4-dichlorophenyl) is prepd. by reducing 3,4-dichlorophenylalanine methyl ester with NaBH4.
