One or more patient stimulus images (600, 916) are projected onto the patient's retina (112), the patient stimulus images (600, 916) including a stationary or mobile fixation target (602). While the patient stimulus images (600, 916) are displayed, images (200) of the patient's retina (112) are captured, such as using an SLO (402), and shadow images (204) are derived from the images (200). The shadow images (204) include representations of shadows (206) cast by floaters (114). Observer stimulus images (918) are generated from the shadow images (204) and the patient stimulus images (600, 916) and projected onto the retinas (112) of an observer, such as using a virtual reality display device (406).
