Zusammenfassung:	The purpose of the present invention is to provide a display device and a drive method for a backlight that can expand a light modulation range while improving visibility for video. The display device has a drive control means that controls a backlight such that a drive period when light is emitted and an idle period when light is not emitted are repeated alternately at a prescribed period. The drive control means is constituted so as to control the ratio of the drive period and idle period and also control the size of drive current supplied to the backlight during the drive period. The drive control means is characterized by carrying out light modulation by controlling the size of the drive current in a range in which an adjustment value is lower than a prescribed value with a prescribed period for the idle period and by carrying out light modulation by making the idle period shorter than the prescribed period in a range in which the adjustment value is higher than a prescribed value with a prescribed value for the drive current.
