Zusammenfassung:	Handling of verification values for portable consumer payment devices is disclosed. A verification value can be generated and associated with a portable payment device. The verification value can serve to supplement the conventional verification value that is printed on the portable payment device in order to provide an additional level of security against fraudulent use. When the portable payment device is used for a qualifying transaction, the generated verification value can be used to verify or authenticate the transaction instead of or in addition to the conventional verification value printed on the portable payment device.
