The system stores the item of digital media in a first memory and decreases the item of digital media to a second quantity of data to produce a first media proxy based on a first amount of time that has elapsed since the item of digital media was stored in the first memory, where the second quantity is less than the first quantity. The system stores the first media proxy in the first memory.
