The method involves guiding a raw material strand (8) by an axially movable guiding and shearing tool (10). A machine ram i.e. plunger (11), is introduced into the strand by a movement in a front dead center, where a front end of the strand is transformed into a cup-shape by backward extrusion. The ram is withdrawn behind the dead center under simultaneous withdrawal of the tool, where shearing of a ring-like material portion from the strand takes place. The ring-like material that remains in an annular space due to friction after shearing, is removed. The space is formed from a ram side. An independent claim is also included for a tool system for producing a ring-like workpiece, comprising a fixed pressing part.
