The present invention relates to a tensioning system for a traction mechanism drive, in particular for a belt or chain drive of an internal combustion engine. The tensioning system (1) comprises a positionally fixed base part (2) with an associated shaft (4) on which a tensioning roller carrier (5) with an associated tensioning roller (10) can pivot by means of a plain bearing arrangement (3). The shaft (4) is assigned, at one end, a friction disc (6) and, at the other end, a flange for fastening the tensioning system (1). The friction disc (6) is connected to a friction and damping element (8) against which a spring element (11) is rotationally fixedly supported with one spring end, wherein the spring element (11) is supported on the tensioning roller carrier (5) in order to introduce a moment of force into the tensioning roller carrier (5). To seal off a sealing gap (21) which is formed between the friction disc (6) and the tensioning roller carrier (5), the friction and damping element (8) is integrally connected to an encircling seal (13).
