Process for preparing surface protective layers with niobium, tantalum and/or titanium on metal substrate materials by thermal injection and build-up welding, characterised in that tau(tau)-boride-containing alloys based on nickel selected from the four-component systems a) nickel-chromium-titanium-boron, b) nickel-chromium-tantalum-boron and c) nickel-chromium-niobium-boron are used, the alloys having the following compositions : a) nickel 48-72 atom % chromium 20-25 atom % titanium 4-16 atom % boron 4-20 atom % b) nickel 45-73 atom % chromium 20-25 atom % tantalum 3-15 atom % boron 3-21 atom % c) nickel 60-72 atom % chromium 20-25 atom % niobium 3-17 atom % boron 4-18 atom %
