The invention relates to a device (100) for the surface treatment of workpieces (102), especially the bodies (102) of vehicles, comprising at least one treatment bath (122a-122f) for the surface treatment of workpieces (102) and at least one conveyor device (106,110,116) which is used to convey the workpieces (102) through the treatment bath (122a-122f), comprising a treatment section in which the workpieces (102) are conveyed through the treatment bath (122a-122f) and at least one upper conveyor section (164,180) which is used to convey the workpieces prior to or after conveyance through the treatment bath (122a-122f) and which is arranged above the treatment section. The inventive device takes up little space, exhibiting only a small amount of extension in the longitudinal direction of the treatment bath (122a-122f). According to the invention, the uppper conveyor section (164,180) is arranged vertically above and/or to the side close to the treatment section (172;318) and/or in the direction of conveyance (146) of the workpieces a horizontal component is provided in the upper conveyor section (478), said component being directed crosswise in relation to the direction of conveyance (146) of the workpieces in the treatment section (466).
