Zusammenfassung:Use of a combination of metformin and a 4-oxo-butanoic acid derivatives in the treatment of diabetes, is new. Pharmaceutical composition comprising, as active agents: (1) metformin or one of its salts; and (2) a compound of formula (I) A-C(=O)-(CH2-CH(CO2H)(CH2-B') (I). A,B' = mono-, bi- or tri-cyclic 6-14C aryl, pyridyl, pyrimidyl, pyrrolyl, furyl, thienyl, 1-14C alkyl, 5-8C cycloalkyl, tetrahydrofuryl, tetrahydropyranyl, piperidinyl, or pyrrolidinyl (all optionally substituted by 1-3 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy, 6-14C aryl, pyridyl, pyrimidyl, pyrrolyl, furyl, thienyl, (6-14C aryl)-(1-6C alkyl), (6-14C)aryl-(1-6C alkyl)-(6-14C)-aryl, halo, CF3, OCF3, CN, OH, NO2, NH2, carboxy, alkoxy(1-6C)carbonyl, carbamoyl, alkyl(1-6C)sulfonyl, sulfoamino, alkyl(1-6C)sulfonylamino, sulfamoyl, alkyl(1-6C)carbonylamino or 2 of the substituents form a methylenedioxy group).
