The elongation of the synchronous toothed belt is calculated by engine timing from a value for a late adjustment in the start of fuel injection through injection valves (11) when the synchronous toothed belt is stretched as well as from a value for the start of fuel injection when the synchronous toothed belt is intact. A value is then given on a display (19).
