An apparatus for automatically handling products or packs comprising a support structure on which carriages provided with elements for carrying the products or packs are positioned, the carriages being slidable on lateral guide elements along an endless path by a relative drive, in which apparatus the carriages are grouped into at least two groups of at least two carriages connected together, in each group a first carriage being motorized and at least one second carriage being dragged by the first carriage, each first carriage being motorized by being coupled to an independent endless towing element extending about two pulleys and driven by a respective motor which can be operated stepwise or continuously between at least one loading zone for the carriage groups and a discharge zone for the carriage groups. The endless towing element is a toothed belt passing about respective toothed pulleys, one of these pulleys being driven by a relative motor.
