Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to a tampon (T) intended for feminine hygiene, consisting of a cylindrical blank which is produced by winding up a sliver-like fleece portion and which is shaped by being loaded with pressing force to produce a preform with a core of higher compaction of the fibre material and with core-surrounding longitudinal ribs of lower compaction and is ultimately shaped into the finished tampon (T) by the application of radial pressure forces on the longitudinal ribs. The invention relates, furthermore, to a process and an apparatus for the production of a tampon (T) of this type. In order, whilst maintaining the buckling resistance, to increase the absorbency, the core is formed by a region (Kr) of maximum compaction having an annular cross-section and by a central region (Kz) of medium compaction located within this annular region (Kr).
