Until now, two separate recording-reproducing apparatuses have been necessary for the gapless recording and/or reproducing of messages. In the recording mode, at the end of the recording time of the one recording medium a changeover was performed on the respective other recording-reproducing apparatus manually by the user or by a control device connected via a connecting cable to the two recording-reproducing apparatuses. A conference-recording system is also known in which an overlapping recording was facilitated by delayed switching off of the respective recording-reproducing apparatus. In order to reduce the outlay in terms of circuitry of the recording-reproducing apparatuses and to offer a high degree of user-friendliness, a single recording-reproducing apparatus is provided which has at least two recording means and a control device for switching over between two drives, the drives being driven by the same motor. The control device derives the control commands for switching on and switching over the respective drives from the velocity of rotation of the winding drives of the drives. Thus the recording-reproducing apparatus permits the user to make gapless, in particular overlapping, recordings of messages in a simple manner. The recording-reproducing apparatus can be used, for example for recording telephone conferences or court proceedings and the like.
