Zusammenfassung:A process for the preparation of 14 beta -hydroxysteroids of the general formula I in which R1 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group and A is the remainder of the steroid molecule, is described and comprises reacting a steroid of the general formula II in which R1 and A have the abovementioned meaning, and R2 is a 1-oxoalkyl radical with 2 to 6 carbon atoms or a benzoyl group, with a nitroso compound of the formula III heating the resulting product in the presence of an alcohol containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and partially hydrogenating the compound of the general formula IV prepared in this way in which R1 and A have the abovementioned meaning.f
