Sewing machine comprising a needle plate attached to needle plate receiving ledges of a machine bed for guiding and transporting the material to be sewn, and a pressure bar resiliently mounted above the needle plate, and a feeder disposed therebeneath, said feeder temporarily engaging through slots formed in the needle plate and being elevated out of the plane of the latter so as to transport the material to be sewn, characterized in - that the portion of the needle plate (7) which is opposite to the pressure bar (4) is freely disposed on three sides thereof in a recess (9) of the machine bed (6), and - that the needle plate (7) is secured laterally of the pressure bar (4) to the machine bed (6) by means of its fourth side which faces the machine.
