Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to a hydrogen generator having a first zone having an alloy and a second zone which is separated from the first zone and in which a liquid or gaseous phase is present from which, by contact with the alloy, hydrogen can be released, wherein the liquid or gaseous phase is transportable to the alloy or the alloy is transportable to the liquid or gaseous phase. In order to enable complete, but slow release of hydrogen from an alloy on contact with the liquid or gaseous phase, it is provided according to the invention that the alloy consists essentially of alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal, and also one of more elements of main groups III, IV, V and/or subgroups Ib, IIb of the Periodic Table of the Elements and/or iron and/or nickel, wherein lithium-aluminium alloys and binary alloys of alkali metals with silicon are excluded.
