Ground mineral having a bulk density of 0.7 to 1.0 Kg./litre and a clinoptilolite content of at least 45 % is converted to catalytic material by treatment with a solution of a metal compound, separation of the solid phase and if desired heating and/or reducing the solid phase. If desired the impregnation with a metal may be preceded by treatment with a solution or melt of an alkali-metal, alkaline earth-metal or ammonium salt or with an acid so as to induce the mineral to assume basic or acidic characteristics. Impregnation may be effected with Ag, Cu, V, Ni, Pt, Pd, Fe, Co, Mo, Cr, Zn or W salt solutions. Examples describe the preparation of supported Ni, Cu and Ag catalysts the latter supported on an acidic zeolite. |
