3,4-dinitrobenzoic acid is prepared by oxidation of a mixture of 3,4-dinitrotoluene (40-99%), 2,3-dinitritoluene and 2,5-dinitrotoluene with a solution of dichromate or nitric acid at 0-250 DEG C., when the 3,4-dinitrotoluene is preferentially oxidized.
