Sedation with α-2 agonist dexmedetomidine during unilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation: a preliminary report

Highlights • We report a series of 11 consecutive patients who received Dex during unilateral STN-DBS between 2013 and 2014 • Eleven patients underwent unilateral STN-DBS with DEX sedation for advanced asymmetric PD • Micro-recordings from each microelectrodes were postoperatively analysed in order...

Zusammenfassung:Highlights • We report a series of 11 consecutive patients who received Dex during unilateral STN-DBS between 2013 and 2014 • Eleven patients underwent unilateral STN-DBS with DEX sedation for advanced asymmetric PD • Micro-recordings from each microelectrodes were postoperatively analysed in order to confirm the presence of typical STN neuronal activity and its distribution along the trajectories. • In all patients micro-recordings revealed recognizable STN activity • The use of Dex allowed a quick and exhaustive assessment of any stimulation-related clinical improvement and side-effects.
