Zusammenfassung:The significance of patent foramen ovale (PFO) in the pathophysiology of Type II decompression sickness (DCS) remains controversial. PFOs are common occurring in approximately one quarter of the normal population, thus making right-to-left shunting of venous gas emboli (VGE) a theoretical concern in both hyper and hypoharic situations. Despite this high prevalence of PFO in the general population, and the relatively common occunence of venous gas bubbles in diving and altitude exposures, the incidence of Type II DCS in diving or with altitude is remarkably low.
