Zusammenfassung:A mobile, self-contained, maximum density separator (MDS) was tested in a 1-day demonstration conducted at the Bayport Confined Disposal Facility in Green Bay, WI. The objective of the demonstration was to evaluate the ability of the equipment to separate a sand fraction meeting a given specification with respect to fines content and PCBs concentration. Additionally, two different methods of excavating and preparing the material for processing with the MDS were tested. One phase of an ongoing effort in evaluating the feasibility of soil washing techniques for volume reduction of dredged material, the field demonstration was preceded by bench-scale fractionation studies. These studies were conducted to determine the magnitude and distribution of contaminants in the material to be processed, and expected contaminant levels in the product streams. The demonstration was the culmination of research into the implementation and interpretation of fractionation studies; type, availability, and suitability of off-the-shelf equipment for sediment processing; and site visits to view different physical separation plant configurations. The results of these cumulative efforts will ultimately be incorporated into summary guidance documents.
