Zusammenfassung:Operations of the Department of Defense must be in compliance with federal, state and local environmental regulations. In addition, military operations in foreign locations may be constrained by current and future environmental regulation imposed by the host countries. Accordingly, the Navy is addressing these concerns by initiating broadly-based environmental quality programs. As part of this initiative, the Office of Naval Research has developed research programs to identify the basic science required for: (1) identification and removal of toxic substances from marine environments occupied by Navy ships and (2) development of environmentally-safe operations on these ships.
