Zusammenfassung: | The literature on the topic of skill maintenance is reviewed and a theoretical analysis is provided. The review includes studies on the retention of knowledge, intratask interference, retention of motor skills, discovery learning, and decay of skills. The proposed theoretical mechanisms underlying skill retention include automatism, division of attention, overlapping of processes, task restructuring, proceduralization of knowledge, levels of processing, and transfer appropriate processing. Also discussed are the generation effect and the role of consciousness in skill retention.
