The Effective Length of a Crack Terminated by a Hole (La Longueur Efficace d'une Fissure qui Aboutit a un Trou)

Zusammenfassung: | The influence of a small hole at the tip of a crack on the compliance of a cracked specimen is examined. It is shown tha the compliance of the specimen with a hole is the same as the compliance of a specimen with an infinitely sharp but slightly longer crack, the increment of length being proportional to the radius of the hole. In the case of mode III straining (the tearing mode) the equivalent sharp crack extends beyond the edge of the hole a distance equal to the radius of the hole. The results are pertinent to the experimental measurement of stress intensity factors. (Author)
