Zusammenfassung: | A microscopic understanding of the electro-optic effect in crystalline solids has been pursued by employing a tight-binding theory for dielectric susceptibilities. The electronic and lattice contributions to the second-order electro-optic susceptibility have been treated separately and the lattice response of a crystal to an external dc electric field has been investigated in a general formalism. The theory has been specifically applied to the compound, tellurium dioxide. In addition, an experimental determination of the electro-optic coefficient, re, in thallium arsenic selenide has been made. (Author) |
