Zusammenfassung:The symposium consists of six articles on ulcerative colitis: diagnosis, differential diagnosis, long-term systemic complications, liver disease in ulcerative colitis, long-term colonic complications, and treatment. This is not intended to be a comprehensive symposium. Some areas of controversy, such as etiology of ulcerative colitis, have been totally ignored. Etiology of ulcerative colitis is yet to be defined and our thoughts regarding management remain empirical. The symposium represents the best available data on the topics reviewed.
