Zusammenfassung: | The purpose of this study is to develop techniques to assist the Army in mesoscale analysis and prediction, for both air and ground operations in Vietnam, through the application of satellite observations. This report describes the procedures used to develop syntheses of normal cloud patterns for the Vietnam area. Normal cloud patterns as derived from satellite pictures for the Northeast and the Southwest Monsoon season are given. Eleven mesoscale features, observed in satellite pictures, are described. The frequency of occurrence of each feature is given for seasons of the year and for various gradient wind directions. Air mass stability, an important influence on the occurrence of mesoscale features, was determined from the 'Lifted Index' at Saigon. Divergence was calculated for a limited number of cases to determine if a unique relationship exists between the air mass stability and the difference between 700 mb and 800 mb divergence. More cases need to be investigated to determine a unique relationship. (Author) |
