Zusammenfassung: | Current criteria and design practices for aircraft structures were found not to be applicable to composite structures because they 1) do not consider the critical interaction of low strain and failure material with structural complexity, 2) do not consider material, design concept, manufacturing methods, and load/environment variabil-ity, and 3) because they assume that residual strength and lifetime allowables are translated from the material level to the component level, which does not apply to composites. It is recommended that near-term composite designs take into account realistic random-load and environment simulation, fleet size, reliability goals, structural complexity, and scaling from test specifications to component level. The report includes statistical design data and analysis techniques for sizing laminates, joints, and cutouts. (R.B.-PL)
