Zusammenfassung:Airflow through the test section of a 1- by 1-ft transonic wind tunnel under subsonic flow conditions was measured by an acoustic method to evaluate feasibility of the method. The method was based on measuring the time of travel of an acoustic signal between a transmitter and a receiver which were located on opposite walls of the tunnel on a line perpendicular to the direction of airflow. An electrical discharge arc-gap transmitter was developed which emits a signal pressure wave with an output intensity significantly greater than that of the tunnel noise. Calibration of the wave velocity increment under quiescent conditions demonstrated good repeatability. Prepared in cooperation with ARO, Inc., Tullahoma, TN. Rept. no. ARO-PWT-TR-73-5.
