Zusammenfassung:The paper, in the field of organizational theory, deals with critical needs of organizations to cope with external stress and changes. The concept of 'competence' is analyzed into components--adaptability, reality-testing, identity, and integration. Each of these components is discussed. Data are presented from a project which had the objective of determining the contribution of each of the components of competence, and of competence as a whole, to organizational effectiveness. Presented at the Southeastern Psychological Association Annual Meeting, held at Miami, Fla., on Apr 1971.
