Zusammenfassung: | The constitution and hydration of portland cement is reviewed and the microstructure of hardened cement paste is introduced with scanning electron micrographs. The development of strength of monoclinic tricalcium silicate (i.e., alite) pastes both with and without the addition of gypsum is presented using scanning micrographs of fresh fracture surfaces. This experimental data is used to illustrate the general principles in the relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties for portland cement pastes. (Author)
