THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF DISC PROPELLERS: PHASE I

The fundamental theory of sine disc propulsion is presented and discussed. The results of an experimental program, in which discs with shaft inclinations of 30, 45, and 60 deg. are tested at various rotational velocities, forward speeds and shaft elevations, are also presented and discussed. Zusammenfassung:The fundamental theory of sine disc propulsion is presented and discussed. The results of an experimental program, in which discs with shaft inclinations of 30, 45, and 60 deg. are tested at various rotational velocities, forward speeds and shaft elevations, are also presented and discussed. In general the theory and experiment were found to be in good agreement. The results of the study are used to select two 4.5 feet diameter, 45 deg. discs to propel the 3000 pound craft 'Ski-Barge' at a speed of 15 mph. (Author)
