Zusammenfassung:	Methods are being developed to improve analysis of trace wear metals in lubricating oil, directed toward detecting incipient mechanical failures. This report contains: (1) A survey of AFOSR-supported research and the application of this research to methods used by the Spectrometric Oil Analysis Program (SOAP) of the Air Force for wear metal analysis; (2) 'New Atomic Spectroscopic Methods for Trace Analysis describing development of atomic fluorescence spectrometry as a new method of ultra trace element analysis, and its relationship to SOAP.
