Zusammenfassung:Ultra-violet irradiation with I = 14 milliwatt/sq cm results in damage to the surface of ST1 polymethylmethacrylate transparencies (perspex), with the result that the further use of this perspex as an optical material is impossible. Ageing of the perspex in air and in a vacuum at t = 80C has practically no effect on the ultimate strength. However, the specific elongation may be reduced under these conditions. The relationships obtained for the strength properties of the surface layers of the perspex as a function of time of UV irradiation show the advantage of oriented perspex as compared with unoriented perspex.
