Zusammenfassung: | The problems associated with the measurement of the velocity distribution function of a gas using a laser are presented and discussed. A simple theoretical model relating the frequency variation of the absorption coefficient across a spectral line of a gas to the distribution function of velocities in the direction of propagation of a plane monochromatic wave is developed and applied to measurements of attenuation of a laser beam passing through the gas. Experimental results with a D.C. excited Neon gas and a He-Ne laser oscillating at 6328.2 A show that under certain experimental conditions agreement with theory is good. (Author) |
