Zusammenfassung: | Grafting of polystyrene to the cellulose in red pine sapwood has been accomplished by gamma irradiation of the ternary solution of styrene, methanol, and water. The resulting material possesses substantially enhanced bending strength and dimensional stability. Optimum conditions have been determined by a factorial experimental design. Electron spin resonance studies have revealed two distinct types of long-lived free radicals, one of which is the specific precursor for the grafting reaction. (Author)
