Zusammenfassung: | Waterside deposits of 1200 psi boilers containing higher than normal amounts of calcium, magnesium and particularly, silica were believed caused by ships' employment of 'rainmaker' feedwater and shore steam. The quality of feedwater and steam condensate supplied ships by various shore installations was evaluated. It was found that some samples contained excessive contamination. Shipboard testing of contamination in feedwater, with the exception of dissolved silica, is practical. Certification of feedwater low dissolved silica content should be required of shore supplier.
