Zusammenfassung:This report summarizes several phases of experimental and analytical efforts directed toward determining the feasibility of thermal energy storage for orbiting solar space power systems. The stored energy is used for cycle heat input to a solar power system during shaded portions of the orbit path. Specific subjects of this report are: (1) Generalized determination of energy storage requirements for various dynamic power systems; (2) Experimental investigation of boiling heat transfer rates of a representative Rankine cycle working fluid with heat released from a fusion-type storage material; (3) Experimental determination of corrosion characteristics of various thermal energy storage materials with potential containment materials; and (4) An experimental and analytical study of a unique method using an electrical charge for reducing hydrogen diffusion rates through containment materials.
