Use of Neutralizing Compounds in Diesel Engines Operating on Sulfur-Rich Fuel

Prolonged engine tests were made on diesel oil containing 1.25% S to which 0.5 to 0.8% of a mixture of organic amines reduced the corrosioninduced wear and the deposition of gum only when used at a rate of 0.8 to 1.0% which is too high for practical value. Tests made with fuels containing 1.25 to 1....

Zusammenfassung:Prolonged engine tests were made on diesel oil containing 1.25% S to which 0.5 to 0.8% of a mixture of organic amines reduced the corrosioninduced wear and the deposition of gum only when used at a rate of 0.8 to 1.0% which is too high for practical value. Tests made with fuels containing 1.25 to 1.6% S and additions of 20%AQUEOUS (NH4)2CO3 (0.03% of the fuel) reduced wear and inhibited the deposition of gum. The processes responsible for gum and other deposits are partly accelerated by the SO3 content. The suppression of SO3 by NH3 was confirmed and points out an entirely new direction in studies on the use of S-rich fuels.
