Amalgam and modernization, opposition and insurgencies in the Napoleonic Rome. This essay analyzes the innovations introduced by the French government in Rome during the Napoleonic domination (1808-1814), highlighting the many social, cultural and architectural changes that took place in the city as well as the creation of a more modern form of public administration. Special attention is given to the processes of “amalgam” between the old and the new and, on the contrary, to the forms of resistance, both explicit and passive, that a section of the population opposed to the changes. *** This article has been published Online First on 09.03.2018 and later included in the full 2018 journal issue ***
