SYNTHESIS OF BORON CARBIDE NANO PARTICLES USING POLYVINYL ALCOHOL AND BORIC ACID

Boron carbide nanoparticles were first synthesised using polyvinyl alcohol and boric acid. Initial samples with a molecular ratio of PVA:H3BO3 = 2.7:2.2 were prepared. These samples were pyrolysed at 600, 700 and 800 C followed by heat treatment at 1400, 1500 and 1600 C. FTIR analysis was implemente...

Zusammenfassung:Boron carbide nanoparticles were first synthesised using polyvinyl alcohol and boric acid. Initial samples with a molecular ratio of PVA:H3BO3 = 2.7:2.2 were prepared. These samples were pyrolysed at 600, 700 and 800 C followed by heat treatment at 1400, 1500 and 1600 C. FTIR analysis was implemented before and after pyrolysis in order to study the reaction pathway. XRD was used to study the composition of the boron carbide specimens. SEM and particle size analysis were also carried out to study the size and morphology of the boron carbide particles. Carbon-free boron carbide nanoparticles with an average size of 81 nm and mainly spherical morphology were successfully produced via this method.
