Zusammenfassung:The article analyzes the dispute for the contemporary history of Portugal between Agostinho de Macedo and Hipólito da Costa, who written alternative chapters for the reign of Queen Maria I in their re-edition of the História de Portugal composta em inglês por uma sociedade de literatos, published respectively in 1802 and 1809. Firstly, it is recovered the dynamics of compilation and translation that made possible the emergence of this História de Portugal, published for the first time in 1788. Furthermore, it analyzes how the polemics that emerged about the contemporary history of Portugal demonstrate the acceleration of the historical time and the impossibility of the reduction of Portugal historical experience into homogeneous narratives in a context of crises.
