Zusammenfassung: | The following article presents two key technologies that will play a critical role in decarbonising the energy sector and combat climate change. The first technology is water electrolysis which has the ability to use renewable energy to split the water into hydrogen and oxygen. The second technology is fuel cells that can use hydrogen produced from renewable electricity and oxygen from the atmosphere to produce electricity and heat. The types of water electrolysis and fuel cells technologies are outlined in detail together with their applications. Their key challenges that have prevented these technologies from being used at scale are briefly described including the current research focus to face these challenges. |
