Zusammenfassung:Borrowing in texts for special purposes – classification and theoretical problems This paper discusses the issue of borrowing in texts for special purposes, Foreign elements in LSP texts are classified into terminological loanwords, non-terminological loanwords and grammatical borrowings. A number of theoretical issues are raised, including the status of terminological borrowing against the traditional distinction of core vs. cultural borrowing, the notion of term-formation patterns, the international status of analytical terms and Neoclassical elements in terms, the salience of natiolectal and domain-specific term-formation patterns and the frequent borrowing of metaphorical and syntactically incompatible English terms into Polish. Non-terminological loanwords are discussed next and the “masking” of certain cases of grammatical borrowing as lexical borrowing is emphasised. Finally, two cases of borrowing originally limited to translated texts are presented and commented on in terms of their potential for dissemination in original Polish texts.
