Zusammenfassung: | State-sponsored violence during & after the 1976-1983 military dictatorship in Argentina & Alberto Fujimori's civilian authoritarian dictatorship is described. State-sponsored violence & violence provoked by political omission undermine the legitimacy of democracy, & threaten democratic transitions in these countries. Fieldwork in greater Buenos Aires & in the Peruvian coca-producing region of the Upper Huallaga Valley illustrates how the experience of violent repression has led citizens to develop peaceful protests against the violence. These movements, eg, the escraches & piqueteros in Argentina & the CONPACCP in Peru, engage in non-violent activities such as demonstrations & blocking roads. The state governments have tried to eradicate these movements, but these citizens continue to demand their rights. 25 References. M. Pflum |
