Zusammenfassung:This article demonstrates that it is possible to find common procedures in both Augusto de Campos and Machado de Assis through the choices made in their translations of cantos from Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy, which shows that translation-art, a term coined by Augusto de Campos, was also practiced by Machado de Assis in the nineteenth century. The article also aims at broadening our understanding of Machado de Assis as a translator by presenting the translation procedures he had adopted by the end of his translation career in a text that is perhaps his translation masterpiece.
