Using a specialized blowgun dart to obtain genetic samples from mammals

We developed a blunt, sticky blowgun dart to collect genetic samples from mammals, and used the technique on the variegated squirrel (Sciurus variegatoides) in June and July 2010. Blowgun and darts cost 40 m. Total sampling success was 88%. The blowgun enabled a rapid method of sample collection that reduced animal stress and the expenses associated with trapping. Developing proficiency in use of the blowgun can be challenging but is overcome with practice. It is difficult to use the blowgun method during heavy rain or high winds.
