Enhanced ductility of as-extruded Mg–Al–Zn—xY (x=0.4 and 1.4wt%) magnesium alloys

In this work, as-extruded Mg–Al–Zn sheets exhibit high ductility along with moderate ultimate tensile strength (UTS) with the addition of yttrium. The ductility of as-extruded AZ80-1.4wt%Y alloys can achieve 30.4% with UTS was 321.3 MPa. The effect of Y addition on mechanical properties and microstr...

Zusammenfassung:In this work, as-extruded Mg–Al–Zn sheets exhibit high ductility along with moderate ultimate tensile strength (UTS) with the addition of yttrium. The ductility of as-extruded AZ80-1.4wt%Y alloys can achieve 30.4% with UTS was 321.3 MPa. The effect of Y addition on mechanical properties and microstructure evolutions of as-extruded AZ80 alloys were investigated. Y element in AZ80 alloy can promote the formation of dynamic recrystallization (DRX), lead to significant grain refinement and weakened texture. The ductility increase with the content of Y can be attributed to the facilitation of pyramidal slip. The strengthening mechanism of as-extruded Mg–Al–Zn−xY (x = 0.4 and 1.4wt%) alloys were also discussed in details, and the calculated values of yield tensile strength (YTS) corresponded well with the measured values, the relative standard deviation was less than 1.5%, indicating the effectiveness of this analytical model.
